Salmonids and Watershed Health

Salmonids (salmon and trout) provide the perfect indicator of the health of whole watersheds from mountains to the sea due to their life cycle, split between freshwater and salt. Salmon must constantly adjust to new conditions found in mountain streams, estuaries, and the open sea even as they contend with human changes to their environment. Some individuals will travel up to 3,000 miles from hatching to laying their own eggs....

Board Bios

George Breed is currently on the boards of the Hydrocephalus Association, the San Francisco Police Activities League and the St. Francis (Hospital) Foundation. He was the General Counsel and Sr. Vice President of PMI Group Inc. and PMI Mortgage Insurance Co.

Bill Buck is a multimedia producer currently filming the series Bay Wild, an environmental documentary highlighting wildlife in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Zeke Grader is an attorney and the Executive Director of the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations which represents working men and women in the West coast commercial fishing fleet.

Dr. Terrance Gosliner is the Senior Curator for Invertebrate Zoology and Geology at the California Academy of Sciences.

Brian Hurley is a founding partner of the advertising agency Grant, Scott and Hurley in San Francisco.

Francesca Koe is a multi-agency SCUBA instructor, freediver and co-founder of the tsunami relief project, Paavima.org. When not in the water she chairs programming for SFMOMA's Contemporary Extension, is a senior editor for Deeperblue.net, and directs strategy at Underground Ads, a mission-based creative firm dedicated to making our world a better place.

Susan McComb is a partner with BAR Architects, an 80 person firm in San Francisco. She specializes in sustainable building design and has volunteered with the GFNMS and FMSA for over a decade.

George Orbelian is author of Essential Surfing and former Surfboard Design Editor for Surfing Magazine. He also sits on the board of the Center for Functional Research.

Judy Rodgers is the co-owner/Executive Chef at Zuni Café.  A James Beard Award winning restaurant with a clientele as diverse as San Francisco, Zuni’s menu changes daily with dishes inspired by traditional Italian and French recipes. Nearly all of the produce, meat, and fish served at Zuni is farmed and harvested in a sustainable manner.

Allan Schreiber recently retired from a career in teaching and education and now works as a voice actor. His credits include voiceovers for FMSA public service announcements. He is a SEALS and Beach Watch volunteer.

Penny Wells is a marine enthusiast and sea kayaking expert who has traveled the globe on various paddling adventures. 

Bob Wilson retired as a lawyer with the Federal Government. He is now actively involved with various non-profit conservation organizations, including: The Marine Mammal Center and Polar Bears International.

timeline of our accomplishments

1995: The Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association (FMSA) is created to direct community resources and provide financial and programmatic support to the GFNMS and the areas it manages

1996: FMSA takes over coordination of Beach Watch Program, which is cited in the Congressional Record as a significant volunteer program of the DOC

1996: Beach Watch and its volunteers are also recognized as vital in the response and clean up of the Cape Mohican oil spill

1997: The SEALS program is established to document the impact of human activity on harbor seals in Tomales Bay and Bolinas Lagoon

1998: The first National Marine Sanctuary visitor center is established in the Presidio, in just five months there are 4,500 visitors

1998: Beach Watch responds to the Command oil spill off of San Mateo County and Fine funds are obtained by GFNMS for itself and Monterey Bay NMS

1999: FMSA Coordinates 150 volunteers contributing 38,500 hours, the equivalent of 19 full-time employees

1999: Beach Watch assesses natural resource damages for the Point Reyes National Seashore oil spill

1999: SEALS volunteers eliminate disturbance of harbor seals by clam diggers on Clam and Seal islands in Bolinas Bay
