Monitoring Handbooks

The education staff is available to help San Francisco Bay Area educators set up and run monitoring programs at their high schools. Handbooks describe the monitoring habitat and sampling protocol, and provide data sheets and data analysis methods. Click here to read more and download PDFs.

Materials & Resources

The Association offers free online and print education resources on Sanctuary topics for use by educators and students.

Educational Curricula

Coastal Ecosystem Curriculum (grades 9-12): The Association has developed a seven-unit Coastal Ecosystem Curriculum that focuses on the open water and intertidal habitats in the Gulf of the Farallones. Teachers and educators who attend our teacher workshops receive this curriculum and all associated classroom activities.

More Resources

We have posters, books, and sanctuary literature available at the Sanctuary Visitor Center on Crissy Field. In addition, we have other online resources, including a series of slide shows about the habitats and natural history of our local national marine sanctuaries.

Activity: Monitoring the Intertidal with Life-sized Photos

Scientific methods used in the classroom take on new meaning when students see (and experience) how real science is done by biologists who monitor the environment. In this activity, students use life-sized photos to simulate monitoring along a vertical transect in the rocky intertidal. (Hint: To print photo quadrats, drag image to desktop, open file, under page setup select legal-sized paper and landscape, then print)
