“Help the Kelp” Screening Brings Community Together in Point Reyes

January 31, 2026

More than 200 community members gathered in Point Reyes Station for a sold-out screening of Sequoias of the Sea, part of the recent “Help the Kelp” community event highlighting kelp forest restoration along the Northern California coast.

Following the film, attendees participated in a live panel discussion focused on the challenges facing bull kelp ecosystems and the collaborative efforts underway to support recovery. Panelists included Julieta Gómez, Kelp Restoration Coordinator with Greater Farallones Association, and Maria Brown, former Superintendent of Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries and a current Board member.

Greater Farallones Association’s Kelp Restoration Program Manager, Rietta Hohman, is featured in the film, sharing the history of kelp decline and the partnerships working to restore these critical underwater ecosystems. The event brought together scientists, artists, conservation partners, and community members for an evening of learning, conversation, and shared commitment to protecting California’s coastal ecosystems.
