With heavy hearts, we remember and celebrate Robert (Bob) Wilson, a lifelong ocean champion whose impact will forever remain connected to the Farallon Islands and surrounding waters that Bob so passionately helped protect.
Bob was a friend to many and a protector of marine mammals, elephants, snow leopards, tigers, and polar bears.
For more than 30 years, he gave his time, resources, knowledge, and heart to help Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, Greater Farallones Association, and the Beach Watch program thrive. At various times Bob served as GFA Executive Director, GFA Board President, Sanctuary Advisory Council member, and Beach Watch volunteer; was named Sanctuaries Volunteer of the Year; and above all, always a treasured friend to staff and colleagues.
We are deeply grateful for his contributions. As one of his friends said, “The world is letting out a big sob.” He will be missed by many.
Bob’s legacy will continue to guide us towards a better, bluer planet. With gratitude to Bob as a tireless ocean advocate, the Greater Farallones Association Board formed the Robert Wilson Sea Lion Legacy Society. Bob became the founding member. Anyone can honor his memory by naming the Greater Farallones Association as a beneficiary of a planned gift or permanent endowment. Your gifts along with his carry forward Bob’s dedication to protecting the amazing California coast he loved so dearly.
