In light of the recent election, we know that many in our community are feeling anxious and concerned about what this change in leadership means for our ocean. We share these concerns over the incoming administration’s proposed changes to the National Marine Sanctuary System and other vital work conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA and our national marine sanctuaries are essential in the fight to protect our ocean ecosystems.
Now, more than ever, we are prepared to stand up and advocate for these critical programs. Regardless of government actions, Greater Farallones Association will continue to work to conserve these extraordinary ecosystems.
According to a recent report, the incoming administration may weaken regulatory protections that prevent oil drilling and mining in over 1.37 million square miles of critical ocean and freshwater habitat. This could open up pathways for extractive practices within the 17 national marine sanctuaries across the United States, which collectively protect over 600,000 square miles of essential marine habitat.
Greater Farallones Association will closely monitor the incoming administration’s proposed actions and keep you informed along the way. We are committed to continuing our work alongside NOAA, firmly advocating for the protection of marine habitat. But we cannot do it alone. As federal support and protections may wane, our work becomes even more dependent on supporters like you who share our dedication to a thriving ocean.
Please consider standing with us by making a donation now. Your support will ensure we can continue our vital programs, whether it’s helping to restore fragile kelp forests, conducting critical research on marine ecosystems, or engaging local communities to foster lifelong connections to the ocean.
Together, we can preserve the sanctuaries we all treasure, no matter the political climate.
Thank you for your commitment to our shared mission and for standing with us during these uncertain times. Together, we can ensure a lasting legacy of marine conservation.
With gratitude for your support,
Monika Krach, Executive Director
